What is an asp?

‘Asp’ is modern Anglicisation for the Egyptian snake known as a cobra.

In Roman Egypt the asp was a sign of royalty.

Cleopatra determined the bite of the asp was the least terrible way to die since it induced sleepiness and heaviness without spasms of pain.
